For the Girl on the Go: Dry Shampoo Review

Between hectic workweeks and weekends gone in a flash, I often find myself saying “just five more minutes” over and over again every morning. Yikes! I missed my AM shower! Hence, dry shampoo has become my best friend. I tested out different product(s), determined to figure out which are worth me spending my pretty pennies on, since I use dry shampoo so much! For a properly “controlled” experiment (thank you 6th grade science class!), I tested all these products two days after washing my hair.

  • Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo: I am a sucker for brand names, so when I was on the hunt for a new dry shampoo at Sephora, I was drawn to the Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo. Like its drugstore counterparts, this was a spray with absolutely no power residue. But honestly, for the price, I was better off going with a drugstore option.
  • Bumble and Bumble Prêt-à-Powder: This was the first dry shampoo I ever purchased. I love Bumble and Bumble products normally, but I was disappointed with this one. The white powder was nearly impossible to blend into my my blond hair. Sure, it soaked up some oil, but I would have basically achieved identical results with baby powder. I am curious to try their color hair powders, but they are on the pricier side.
  • Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo: Overall this wasn’t bad for a drugstore buy, but it didn’t really seep into my roots enough to take away that greasy look. It definitely added volume to my hair, though. I would suggest this for if you plan on tying your hair back, but it is not the product you want to use if you plan on leaving your hair down.
  •  amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo: I was instantly drawn to this product’s pretty packaging. There was absolutely no powder residue after use. It boasts that it’s made from “natural rice starch” and “Sea Buckthorn Berry extract,” rather than “aluminum shavings” found in other dry shampoos. Whatever the exact ingredients may be, I loved this product! I would say it was my second favorite. It took away the gross, unwashed feeling and made my hair feel super silky.
  • : Dove is best known for its skincare products, and I honestly didn’t even know that they had a dry shampoo out until I started this experiment. Of all \the drugstore buys, this was definitely the most successful. And I would say 3rd most successful overall. There was no powder residue, it added volume and had a fresh, subtle scent.
  • Living Proof Perfect Hair day Dry Shampoo: This product launch garnered a lot of press, so I was very eager to try it out. When I first sprayed it in my hair, it seemed chalky. But the instructions tell you to wait and let it soak in for 30 seconds before rubbing it in. I would suggest waiting a little bit longer-maybe like a minute. By far, this product was the most successful. With most dry shampoos, I am just trying to get through the day looking presentable, but this product went the extra step, volumizing and thickening my naturally-thin hair. It even inspired me to purchase the Living Proof Perfect Day Shampoo and Conditioner.
  • and : I didn’t get great results with either of these. I didn’t feel like they did at all what a dry shampoo is supposed to do. The only thing they did do was add some volume to my hair, but they didn’t take away the unshowered feeling.

Overall Results:

1st place: Living proof ‘Perfect hair Day’ Dry Shampoo

2nd Place: amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo

3rd Place: Dove Refresh+Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo

My number one will always be baby powder! I actually tried the living proof dry shampoo when my hairdresser laughed at me for still using baby powder. It worked well, it made my hair feel clean but for the price it didn’t seem worth it. I went through the whole bottle in 2 weeks (I have a lot of hair…) since I go to the gym/workout everyday but don’t want to wash it every day. Also my hair is really thick so the volumizing effects made my hair uncontrollable. Just my two cents! Still a great product overall.

Like I said, I feel like the Bumble and Bumble product is basically like baby powder! Makes sense for you to use baby powder, since you have light and thicker hair!
